Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Sends Nowruz Greetings for Persian New Year

March 24, 2013, Washington, D.C. – Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, last week released a statement to mark the celebration of Nowruz and the arrival of spring. 

In her statement, Pelosi praised Iranian Americans for their contributions to the social and economic fabric of American society.  ““The United States is blessed each day by the leadership and contributions of our thriving Iranian community,” said Pelosi.  “Seeking security for their families, Iranian Americans embraced the American promise of pluralism and the belief that perseverance can yield progress and prosperity.”

Pelosi also expressed her hope that Nowruz will usher in a period of peace and cooperation between the United States and Iran.  “With ongoing negotiations between our two countries, with a new President in Iran, there is a possibility for progress, for a new beginning, and for an era of partnership – as long as Iran’s leaders uphold their international obligations, abandon the path of isolation, pursue a peaceful future, and respect the dignity and rights of their citizens.”
