Iranian American Organizations Issue Statement of Support for Iran Nuclear Deal

July 27, 2015, Washington, DC— The Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA), along with eight other Iranian American organizations issued a joint statement today in support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal.  The statement praises the historic diplomatic achievement and hopes for benefits to both the American and Iranian people by creating the possibility of sustained peace and renewed relations.

“As members of the Iranian-American community, we are proud Americans who are dedicated to our country. We are also proud of our heritage, and many of us visit Iran regularly and maintain strong ties with our friends and family in the country,” the statement reads. “We are hopeful this deal will open possibilities for greater people-to-people ties between the United States and Iran including through cultural and educational exchanges. We are also optimistic that this diplomatic breakthrough will help advance economic opportunities for the Iranian people and will enable new opportunities to advance human rights in Iran.”

The statement also points out that public opinion surveys illustrate that a majority of Iranian Americans and the American public at large are supportive of the agreement with Iran.  The results of PAAIA’s 2015 poll shows that  nearly two-thirds of Iranian Americans approved of the P5+1 framework agreement while overall U.S. opinion also leans in support of a nuclear agreement with Iran by a two-to-one margin.  A new Public Policy Polling survey also finds strong national support for the deal.  According to this survey, 54% of voters support the agreement whereas only 38% disapprove of it.

The organizations represented in the letter encourage members of Congress to support the nuclear deal and to avoid taking any measures that may “derail the international agreement, impede U.S. diplomacy, or take this opportunity for peace off the table.”

The other signatories to the statement include the Bay Area Iranian-American Democrats, International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, Iranian Alliances Across Borders, Iranian American Bar Association, Iranian American Democrats of San Diego, National Iranian American Council,  Network of Iranian American Professionals of Orange County,  and Pars Equality Center.
