Nowruz Resolution Gains Traction

Nowruz Resolution Gains Traction

PAAIA Initiative Passes House Committee

January 27th, 2010, Washington, D.C. – Today the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform passed H. Res 267, the resolution in honor of the Iranian New year (Nowruz), therefore moving it one step closer to being voted on in the U.S. House of Representatives.

At the urging of PAAIA, Congressman Michael Honda (CA-15th) introduced H.Res. 267 into the House of Representatives on March 19, 2009. The resolution recognizes the cultural and historical significance of Nowruz, expresses appreciation to Iranian Americans for their contributions to American society, and wishes Iranian Americans, the people of Iran, and all those who celebrate the holiday a prosperous new year.

The Nowruz resolution is a part of PAAIA’s broader efforts to foster greater understanding of Iranian culture and heritage as well as projecting an accurate and positive image of the Iranian American community that truly reflects our values and achievements. Furthermore, PAAIA has worked with Congressman Honda’s office over this past year to promote the Nowruz resolution and gain co-sponsors. This effort has led to the addition of Representatives Brian Bilbray (CA-50th), John Culberson (TX-7th), Randy Forbes (VA-4th), Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24th), Shelia Jackson Lee (TX-18th), Carolyn Maloney (NY-14th), Jerry McNerney (CA-11th), John Mica (FL-7th), Michael Rogers (MI-8th), Linda Sanchez (CA-39th), Rob Wittman (VA-1st), and Frank Wolf (VA-10th) amongst the many co-sponsors who have signed on to the resolution. In addition, Iranian Americans throughout the country have voiced their support for the Nowruz resolution directly to their member of Congress throughout the last year.

With the approval of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Nowruz resolution is ready to be presented and voted on in the House of Representatives. If passed, it would be the first time that the U.S. Congress has officially recognized the Iranian New Year.

PAAIA will continue to monitor developments closely and will push to have the resolution voted on before Nowruz of this year and will continue to advocate for the passage of the Nowruz resolution.
