WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, a bipartisan group of U.S. Senators formally introduced the Iran Protest Resolution in the United States Senate, reaffirming congressional support for millions of Iranians peacefully protesting for human rights, dignity, and democratic freedoms.
Since late 2025, the people of Iran have taken to the streets in one of the most significant nationwide protest movements in decades, driven by economic hardship, systemic repression, and demands for fundamental freedoms. The Iranian government has responded with severe brutality — killing demonstrators, arresting thousands, and imposing widespread internet blackouts to silence dissent.
In response, Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced the bipartisan Iran Protest Resolution to condemn the regime’s violent crackdown and affirm U.S. support for the Iranian people’s right to determine their own future.
What the Resolution Does
The resolution:
- Strongly condemns the Government of Iran’s killing of protestors and bystanders
- Condemns the regime’s suppression of peaceful assembly and basic human rights
- Commends the courage of the Iranian people protesting despite harsh repression
- Calls on the Government of Iran to hold free and fair elections
- Supports efforts to hold human rights violators accountable
The measure has already attracted broad bipartisan support in the Senate.
Why It Matters
If adopted, the Iran Protest Resolution will send a clear message that the United States stands with the Iranian people as they peacefully demand freedom, justice, and democratic self-determination. At a time of intensified repression, congressional action underscores America’s commitment to universal human rights and reinforces global calls for accountability.
The Iran Protest Resolution has been cosponsored on the Senate side by Senators Booker, Boozman, Britt, Budd, Capito, Cramer, Cruz, Ernst, Fischer, Grassley, Hoeven, Kaine, Merkley, Mullin, Ricketts, Rosen, Sullivan, and Van Hollen.
