As part of PAAIA’s Capitol Hill Internship Program (CHIP), students and young professionals have the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in public service while working in congressional offices across the country. The program is designed to help cultivate the next generation of Iranian American civic leaders by providing meaningful exposure to policymaking, constituent services, and the day-to-day operations of government. This spring, one of our CHIP Fellows, Andre Kish, had the opportunity to intern in the district office of Congressman Jim Himes in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
“During the spring semester, I had the privilege of interning in the district office of Congressman Jim Himes in Bridgeport, Connecticut, through PAAIA’s CHIP Fellowship Program. Throughout the experience, PAAIA provided guidance and support that helped me navigate both the internship process and my professional development. The opportunity connected my interests in politics and public policy with my long-term career goals while also allowing me to give back to the people of my home state.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the internship was working alongside the Congressman’s talented and dedicated staff. Through the experience, I was able to build professional relationships, strengthen both hard and soft skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the political process at the congressional level.
On a daily basis, I interacted with constituents and learned firsthand about the issues most important to residents across Connecticut. I observed how congressional offices assist individuals navigating federal agencies and was particularly interested in learning more about immigration-related constituent services and the ways congressional offices can help expedite complex cases.
I also gained valuable insight into the Congressman’s work with nonprofit organizations and local businesses, particularly in the area of federal grants and community assistance. Seeing the breadth of support a congressional office provides — not only to individual constituents but also to organizations serving the broader community — was especially impactful.
As I continue my graduate studies at New York University and begin working in Washington, D.C. this summer, I will carry forward the lessons, skills, and relationships I gained through this experience. I am incredibly grateful to PAAIA and the CHIP Fellowship Program for providing me with this opportunity and for helping shape the next chapter of my professional journey.”
PAAIA is proud to support emerging leaders through the CHIP Fellowship Program and remains committed to creating opportunities for Iranian American students and young professionals to engage directly in public service and civic leadership. We congratulate our fellow on the successful completion of his internship and look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes in the future.
